Lights and tyres campaign

Ready to face the winter chill

The Road Safety "Lighting and Tyres" campaign will kick off on 16 October this year and run until one month later. ACL's mechanical experts will once again be taking part.

With the days getting shorter and the temperatures dropping, traffic conditions are set to deteriorate considerably. It's a good idea not to overdo it and to make sure that your vehicle is ready for winter. As it does every year, ACL is coming to your home as part of the Road Safety "Lighting and Tyres" campaign between 16 October and 17 November.

For a month, the ACL will be organising checkpoints across the country (from Bascharage to Wemperhardt via Kayl and Howald, among others) to check the condition of tyres and the correct operation of car lights, free of charge. The good news is that the ACL experts will also take the time to check the condition of your car's battery.

Avoid battery failure

According to ACL statistics, battery-related breakdowns are the most common, especially during the winter months. Batteries don't like the cold. Below 10°C, the chemical reaction is slower and sends less current to the electrical components. If your battery already has a few weaknesses, you're almost certain to have a breakdown.
Especially as modern cars are voracious consumers of electricity. In winter, remember to start your car before de-icing or heating the seats. Good to know: the average lifespan of a car battery is 4 years.

Wear the right tyres in winter

Dead leaves, rain, black ice, snow. Motorists' sworn enemies are making a comeback in the great winter saga. To make sure you're on the safe side, ACL checks the material, age, profile and general state of wear of your tyres. As a reminder, the law stipulates that the minimum tread depth must be 1.6 mm. For safety reasons, ACL recommends that you do not continue to drive on winter tyres with a tread depth of less than 4 mm. They are less effective on snow.

Seeing well and being seen at all times

During the lighting check, ACL makes sure that all the bulbs are in working order (low beam, high beam, fog lights, long-range headlights, parking lights, number plate lights, reversing lights and indicators). We also check the condition of the reflectors and headlamp lenses.

The position of the lights is also essential. This is another very important aspect of the ACL inspection. If they're too high, they can dazzle oncoming traffic, and if they're too low, they won't illuminate the road sufficiently.

Important:

For the duration of the campaign, tyres and lights will be checked exclusively at the stands, without an appointment at the times and locations listed below.

Please note that there will be no tyre and lighting checks at the ACL Diagnostic Center, the ACL Diagnostic Center in Bertrange will continue to carry out all other tests, but only by prior appointment via our website, by phone +352 450045-6007 or by email: dc1@acl.lu

Safety first!  Therefore, this campaign is addressed to every road user.
