.. for a Safe and Stress-Free Trip to the Mountains

With the start of the carnival holidays, many motorists from Luxembourg traditionally set off for the ski resorts. To avoid stress and unexpected incidents, the ACL recommends careful preparation. Here are seven practical tips to help you reach your destination safely and with peace of mind.

1. Check your vehicle before departure

A quick vehicle inspection before a long journey can make all the difference. Check tyre pressure and tread depth, lights, battery condition and all essential fluid levels. These simple precautions significantly reduce the risk of breakdowns on the road.

2. Winter tyres remain the safest choice in mountainous areas

Although all-season tyres bearing the Alpine symbol are permitted, genuine winter tyres provide superior grip on snow and ice thanks to their specific rubber compound and numerous sipes. On steep roads and in winter conditions, all-season tyres reach their limits more quickly. Snow chains and standard winter equipment should also be carried.

3. Secure skis and luggage properly

Roof boxes, ski racks and loose items must be firmly secured. A final check before departure ensures that, even in the event of emergency braking, no objects become a safety hazard.

4. Plan your route, traffic and departure time

At the beginning of the holidays, heavy traffic is expected on the main routes towards the Alps. Checking weather forecasts, traffic conditions and possible alternative routes can save valuable time and reduce stress. Choosing a flexible departure time can also help avoid congestion.

5. Keep an eye on energy costs and charging options

Drivers of combustion-engine vehicles should review current fuel prices along their route. Electric vehicle users should ensure that charging cards or apps are functioning properly and that sufficient charging points are available along the journey. It is also advisable to check in advance with your hotel or accommodation about charging facilities at your destination.

6. Do not forget the vignette

A valid motorway vignette is mandatory when travelling through Austria and Switzerland. To avoid waiting times near border crossings, it is recommended to purchase the vignette before departure, for example at the ACL Shops in Bertrange or Ingeldorf.
Digital vignettes should only be purchased via the official providers: for Austria via www.asfinag.at
and for Switzerland via via.admin.ch.

7. Joker: Travel with the right protection

And if, despite careful preparation, something goes wrong, an ACL membership ensures you are not left alone in the event of a breakdown and can return home safely.
