The Ford S-Max has been on the road since 2006, and in 2021 it was updated to hybrid (non-rechargeable). Equipped with a 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine supported by an electric motor and a small 1.1 kWh lithium battery, the MPV is designed to reduce CO2 emissions. The new power train is very economical in use, averaging 6L/100 km during our 360 km test drive, which alternated between main roads and village traffic. This hybrid version is a pleasure to drive as long as you don’t demand too much power, as the petrol engine is relatively noisy when revved up. As is often the case with Ford vehicles, the chassis is very efficient and, despite its 1.9 tonne weight, the handling is impressive. However, the damping can be a little firm at low speeds on rough surfaces. The interior space is impressive and this particularly versatile MPV is far better than the less practical SUVs that are currently in vogue. The 7-seater version of this S-Max will delight large families. As the number of MPVs on offer shrinks, hybridisation allows Ford to continue to offer its S-Max with reduced CO2 emissions without imposing the constraints of a 100% electric vehicle.
