After the revolutionary i3 launched in 2013, and more recently the iX3, BMW is now on the offensive with two new 100% electric models: the i4 and the iX. While the i4 borrows as many body elements as possible from its sister car the 4 Series Grand Coupe, the iX is a completely new vehicle. Based on an all-new platform, the iX is an impressive all-electric SUV with a new look that is a complete departure from the rest of the Bavarian brand’s line-up. Love it or hate it, but the appearance of the iX will not leave anyone indifferent! The front end features a huge, stylised kidney-shaped grille, while the rear end and profile feature a cube-like design that gives the car a futuristic, Star Wars look. And although the exterior is surprising, it is the cabin that literally breaks the mould, with its generous space in an environment with a distinctly ‘lounge’ feel. The same applies to the alcantara (or leather) covered dashboard, with its large curved digital panel that serves as a user interface for the on-board information and infotainment system. Currently available in two all-wheel drive versions, xDrive40 and xDrive50, the iX offers ranges of between 397 km and 630 km depending on the battery size (76.6 or 111.5 kWh), with excellent performance. The iX can recover 100 km of range in a one-hour charge with a household Wallbox (11 kW) or in six minutes with an HPC charger (200 kW). Image source: ©BMW
