Subaru gives the Forester and the XV a bit of a boost. Both of these four-wheel drives now have semi-hybrid Boxer engines.
The e-Boxer suffix clearly identifies the vehicles as hybrids. the existing 2-litre 150 hp Boxer engine is now supported by a 16.7 hp electric engine and lithium-ion battery. As of 2020, both vehicles now have an e-Boxer as standard along with continuous variation Lineartronic automatic transmission.
While the electric engine is positioned close to the vehicle’s centre of gravity, the batteries and other components are located over the rear axle. This gives a lower centre of gravity, with weight distributed more evenly between front and rear axle. The system coordinates the interaction between petrol and electric engine automatically. It lets you switch between three driving modes as you require. The electric engine kicks in right from the start.
The electric engine can cover up to 1.6 km and reach a maximum speed of 40 km/h. The Boxer is activated at average speed and is the only source of power at higher speeds, also charging the hybrid battery. Kinetic energy released on deceleration is also used to charge the small battery. The dashboard display shows the driver and passengers the energy flow in the driving system.
Acceleration performance has been improved by 30%, and fuel consumption and emissions have gone down by up to 11% depending on driving style compared to the previous 2-litre Boxer engine. Standardised consumption, which also includes motorway journeys, has gone down by around 6%.CO2 emissions are 150 g/km.
