Renault Alpine A110

Published on 30.01.2018

Sports car enthusiasts will rejoice!

Six years after the return of the Alpine, the new A110 - a mid-engined two-seater coupe with a sleek, lightweight rear - marks the return of the brand. Inspired by the original ‘Berlinette’, the model promises agility and driving pleasure without compromising on everyday comfort.

Designed and manufactured in France by the Groupe Renault's design team and Renault Sport's engineering teams, the A110 marks the Alpine's return. The Premiere Edition is a limited production run of 1,955 cars - a nod to the year of its creation. The production version will follow quickly.
This two-seater sports coupe features a rear mid-mounted rear-wheel drive four-cylinder 185 kW/252 hp engine mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It is priced at around €56,856.10.

Design and interior

Clearly inspired by the 1962 Berlinette model, the new A110 bridges the gap between the past and future with an aesthetic that stands the test of time. Fans of the brand will immediately recognise the car's flowing, elegant bodywork now featuring twin front headlights, sculpted flanks, a creased hood and curved rear window. While the LED daytime running lights and tail lights have dynamic turn indicators, the A110 also boasts modern conveniences such as the navigation system, air-conditioning and cruise control. Despite its very compact exterior dimensions, the passenger compartment is spacious enough to allow the driver and passenger to be comfortably seated.
The 100-litre storage space in the front can accommodate a pair of airline carry-on cases, while the 96-litre rear storage compartment can fit two full-face helmets plus an overnight bag.

Technology

Light, agile and fun to drive, the A110 Premiere Edition is above all an authentic Alpine. It has been designed to prioritise driving pleasure above lap times and outright power without compromising on everyday comfort. Thanks to its light body, low centre of gravity and optimal weight distribution, the driver feels at one with the machine. The aluminium chassis and body shape the agility and balance of the A110. Bonded and riveted to reduce weight even further, the compact aluminium body offers the best balance between rigidity, weight and build quality.
Indeed, at a weight of just 1,080 kilos (vehicle in working order), the sports coupe promises real driving pleasure. The forward/reverse weight distribution of 44/56% makes the A110 perfectly balanced in cornering.  With its very pliant ride quality and suite of driver aids - including ABS, traction control and stability control - the A110 remains usable, safe and comfortable day-to-day.  The A110 has three driver modes: Normal, Sport and Track. These adjust the weight of the – electrically assisted – throttle response, steering, gear shirts, exhaust sound, stability control settings, offering a more incisive, exciting and emotional driving. On the dashboard, the 10-inch digital TFT display also changes according to the driver mode so that in Sport and Track modes the rev counter and gear display are more prominent.

Competition

Although the brand is known for its rich heritage in building agile, lightweight sports cars that are in their element on winding mountain roads, Alpine is also well-known for competing at the highest level of international motorsports. The vehicle's crowning glories include winning the 1973 World Rally Championship title
and outright victory at the 24 Hours of le Mans 1978. It is in the same spirit that Alpine competes in international endurance racing today.
Its title-winning FIA LMP2 World Endurance Championship programme showcases the brand's ambition and commitment to motorsports. New for 2018, the recently announced one-make Alpine Europa Cup for race-prepared A110 Cups, which will be run by Alpine’s racing partner Signatech, demonstrates the coupe’s performance as well as Alpine’s commitment to customer racing.
