Lights and tyres campaign 2018

The ACL and Opti-vue have come together to offer you 3 tests for safe driving.

The annual “Lights and tyres campaign”, launched by the Luxembourg road safety organisation Sécurité Routière, will run this year from 15 October to 15 November.
The ACL has joined this initiative and is offering, together with the opticians Opti-vue, 3 tests throughout the country: a free check on your tyres, lights and your eyesight, for both your safety and that of other road users.
Reduced visibility, risk of freezing mornings, slippery road surfaces... so many hazards that drivers have to look out for at this time of the year. For both your safety and that of other road users, the ACL and Opti-vue are organising checkpoints all over the country to check that your tyres are in good condition, your car’s lights are working correctly, and new for 2018, a check on drivers’ eyesight.

Tyre check
Tyre checks are essential, especially at this time of year. Dead leaves on the road, rain and the drop in temperature are even more of a safety hazard for drivers if their tyres are not in good condition. We will check whether the material of your tyres is still in good condition, and also the age, tread and state of wear, which may be uneven. As a reminder, according to the law, the minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm. For safety reasons, the ACL recommends that you do not go below 4 mm. We advise you to fit winter tyres as soon as the temperatures go below 7 degrees, because summer tyres find it difficult to grip cold asphalt. This is due to them having a harder texture than winter tyres, and so there is an increased risk of skidding. In Luxembourg, winter tyres are compulsory for winter conditions (ice, settled snow, slush, patches of ice or frost) at any time of the year.

Lights checks
When checking your lights, the ACL tests whether all your lights are working and their position (dipped headlights, full beam headlights, fog lights, long-range lights, sidelights, number plate lights, reversing lights and indicator lights). We also check the condition of the reflectors and the glass in the lights. The various types of headlights must be positioned so that they do not dazzle oncoming drivers and so that they provide the driver maximum visibility. Badly adjusted headlights can represent a real danger. If there is fog, even if it is not very thick, you should reduce your speed and switch on your dipped headlights. If visibility is less than 50 metres, you must also switch on your fog lights and keep a comfortable safety distance from the vehicle in front. You must also take care because lights switching on automatically in fog is not always reliable.

New for this year: Eyesight checks
This year, whilst touring through Luxembourg, the ACL will be accompanied by its partner Opti-vue. Along with your tyres and lights checks, you will have the opportunity of having your eyesight tested. Using professional equipment, Opti-vue will be able to make an initial diagnosis on the condition of your eyes and to give you advice if any problems are found. Good eyesight for a driver is as much a safety factor as the good condition of the vehicle. 1 driver out of 5 does not see the road properly: short-sightedness, long-sightedness, presbyopia, astigmatism and the sun or headlights of other vehicles can be the cause. It is important that you get your eyesight tested regularly. On the road, it will help you to predict hazards better and so adapt your driving to any obstacles, whether you are out walking, cycling and of course, travelling in your car.
For pedestrians and cyclists, the ACL also advise you to make yourselves well visible in autumn and winter. Wear clothes and/or items that are reflective. This will enable you to be seen on the road when it is dark. This goes especially for children.
