The used car market is growing all the time, which is why it is worth taking your time and comparing any offers you get carefully. The ACL will be happy to assist and advise you with the process.
It is important to take some precautions before selling your used car yourself.
How can you find out what a used car is worth?
Before buying or selling a used car, you must get an estimate of the market value. The ACL can calculate the target price of a used car using the Eurotax valuation (purchase and selling value). The information needed is the make, model and type of car, a list of any special equipment it has, the mileage as well as the month and the year it was first registered. Having your vehicle valued by a private buyer or car garage is no longer necessary, as the average of these valuations is used as the basis for negotiation.
Having said that, the value also depends largely on the state of the vehicle, particularly its technical condition. And this is where someone who is not an expert in this respect may fail to notice something that could come at a price further done the line. As a safety measure, the Automobile Club encourages its members to have their vehicle tested by the ACL-Diagnostic Center
technicians before signing a contract. The ACL-Diagnostic Center issues an inspection certificate for every car tested. This is a good investment as the ACL expert assessment inspires confidence and means you can ask for a better price.
Nowadays, used cars are often sold on e-commerce websites. Before putting your advertisement online, we recommend taking photographs of the vehicle after it has been cleaned thoroughly both inside and outside. The ACL, in partnership with Luxauto.lu, will publish the advertisement online, along with photographs and the words "Approved by the ACL-Diagnostic Center". Interested parties can then contact the seller directly, who will be able to show them the full inspection certificate.
Also make sure that you have the vehicle documents, maintenance book, user manual and radio code, as well as the keys.
The sales contract
In order to ensure that all agreements concluded at the time of purchase or sale of a used car are in writing, the ACL can provide motorists with a standard sales contract (in French, German, English and Portuguese). It will be issued in duplicate. It is also important for the buyer to verify that the seller is the owner named on the log book.
If the interested customer would like to test drive the car, we recommend going with the person to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Lastly, only hand over the car keys when the payment has been made.

The following points are particularly important for buyers to consider during the test drive:
- Does the engine start the first time?
- Is there too much play in the steering?
- Can you hear strange noises?
- Watch out for exhaust gases! White smoke = water consumption; blue smoke = oil consumption.
- Does the gearbox work as normal? Do the gears change effortlessly?
- Watch out for suspicious judders when braking!
- Watch out for too much play in the steering wheel!
- Does the car pull to the side when braking?
- Does the dashboard work as normal?
- Check that the air conditioning, heating, central locking system, alarm, radio, seat adjustment mechanisms, etc. work.
